The Game Plan

Feb 01 2010 Published by under Sunday mornings @ Fellowship, vision

Told as if the audience @ Fellowship were twittering about the service this Sunday morning:

(10:28 am)  Is that Bon Jovi playing as we walk in the room?  Why yes, it certainly is.  Nice.

(10:29 am)  There’s nothing like walking into any room listening to the smooth rock voice of Bon Jovi, except maybe Axl Rose in the late 80′s, but we digress.

(10:30 am)  There seems to be a certain energy in the room this morning, like we’re all expecting something to happen.

(10:33 am)  Wow!  Al and the band are on fire this morning.  Somebody get a hose out here!

(10:34 am)  Nice video.  We didn’t know Steve Blumer’s mom came to the internet campus.  Cool.

(10:40 am)  2nd song was good too.  We WILL make the change and we won’t go back!  Also, does that guitarist have a fake finger?

(10:42 am)  Video of mom thanking the Gambogee place (elementary environment)  leaders for their role w/ our children teared us up a bit.

(10:43 am) Wow!  There are a lot of people in this room we don’t know.

(10:48 am)  Ha!  Marty opens with a great  story about his old pastor, Lonnie.

(10:50 am)  “A dream without a plan is only a wish.”

(10:55 am)  “We’re not trying to build an empire, but we are trying to infiltrate Massachusetts with the Fellowship Community.”

(11:00 am)  Marty’s about to launch into what he’s calling Phase 1 – the first phase of our new building project

(11:05 am)  4 specifics about “phase 1 – the beginning”

(11:05 am)  1.  The elimination of the back trailer – the “scourge of our existence”

(11:06 am)  2.  Patch and paint the rear exterior wall of the main building.  I guess we’ll be doing that part ourselves!  There goes that Saturday.

(11:06 am)  3.  Replace rear doors.  4.  Replace roofing on south side of church.

(11:07 am)   “Starting with phase 1 means first of all eliminating the distractions.”

(11:09 am)  $20,000 is a lot of money.

(11:10 am)  We want Fellowship to be a place where people can safely watch, connect, and grow.

(11:15 am)  Luke 14:25-33, Wow!  that Jesus guy says some really crazy things.  Where’s the love?

(11:21 am)  “To surrender to Jesus is not just to say,’I like Jesus’.  It’s more than that.”

(11:22 am)  “A person who is growing is a person who is planning to grow.”

(11:25 am)  “Before you grow, you’ve got to eliminate the distractions in your life.”

(11:31 am)  Suuuweeet!  Fellowship Worcester…we are cheering at that prospect!

(11:32 am)  The Splat Coffee shop!  Boo-yah!  Cheering again.  We’re doing a lot of that today! :  )

(11:32 am)  Very cool.  The Fellowship Haiti Mission.  más aplausos

(11:34 am)  “What are the distractions in your life that are keeping you from fulfilling your dream?”  Very inspiring Marty

(11:36 am)  Video of a quote from Milka about the FC family, but most of us are thinking about things we can eliminate in order to grow.

(11:39 am)  Worshipping.  “From the inside out, Lord my soul cries out!”

(11:44 am)  Last song just finished.  “On Christ the solid rock we will stand!”  Our hearts want to jump out of these bodies!

(11:45 am)  The immediate vision is clear in our heads, and we are ready for the future!  Go God!  Go Fellowship!

(11:48 am)  Oh crud, we forgot to pick up the kids!

(Noon)  We should follow Marty and FC Holden on Twitter.

This morning I asked this question via status message:  “If you could twitter or facebook status a piece of advice to me right now based on what you’re going through, what would it be?

Here were your answers:

Via Twitter:

“Make a list and knock it down 1 by 1.” @k_seas
“Cling to God in desperation as if your very life depended upon it (in all actuality, it does). This is the essence of true faith.” @ianmatthewrice
“Keep looking forward.” @Brandonwhittall

Via Facebook
“Suffer well.” Ryan
“Buy cheap sunglasses, so when you break them, it doesn’t hurt as much.” Clay
“Pick a career you enjoy.” Tony
“Put all your cares and fears in God’s hands – for He is in control.” Denise
“Watch out for cheap cocaine.” Mike B.
“If part of the everyone is missing is missing, part of the needy goes missing as well. Acts 2:44-45″ Steve B.
“God is so good to provide what we need at the perfect timing – not mine – So very thankful.” Melaney
“Parenting is alot tougher than what it seemed at 18.” Michelle, Part 1
“More income and less hours worked for it.” John
“For every mountain, there is a miracle.” Tina

All right, your turn.  You have any wisdom to add to this list?

For those of you who think, “Wow, some of these people get on facebook a lot. They change their status’ every 3 minutes.” We do it through Twitter.com, not facebook. And we can do it through our phones. I know, I know, genius. You should try twitter starting right now. Follow me at twitter.com/martyjon

Status Issues

Dec 11 2008 Published by under Life

10630017

Marty is sitting on the beach, thinking about all the people who have wronged him in his lifetime and then sharing with everyone else how horrible thse people are via my status messages.

I love it when people use their twitters or the status in their Facebook messages to make a passive aggresive statement that something or someone needs to change.   It’s like, “I’m going to let you know what you are doing that makes me so mad, I can’t even stand it, but I’m not going to actually tell you.  What I’m going to say is :

_____________ hates it when people talk about me behind my back.  They are stupid.

or

______________ doesn’t like people meddling into his life.  Stay out, and I’ll stay out of your life.

Thankfully no one that I know of has written these referring to me, but I have seen them, and everytime I do, I think…

“Man, that person’s got issues.”

Eating Online

Oct 14 2008 Published by under blogs,Life, sports and fitness

My big idea for today, as promised from yesterday, is this:

I’ve been doing some research on accountability here and there, reading some books and observing human behavior and that sort of thing, and I thought of this online idea that I am going to test on myself.  This idea is in the area of eating and drinking.

You see, I eat a lot. I drink a lot of soda.  You might even say I’m addicted.  Thankfully I exercise enough and God has gifted me with some decent metabolism to fight the amount of food and drink that I intake.  That being said however, there is no doubt that I eat and drink too much.  Scripture says to “not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.  Instead, be filled with the spirit,” and also asks the question, “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?…Your body is not your own.”

I am convinced that I can do better with my eating and drinking habits, and have already been working on them.  So I’d like your help too.  You don’t have to do much – just be there.

I am going to start twittering each and everything I eat and drink.  Of course my twitter is connected to my facebook, so this will go on my facebook status as well.  All I need to know is that people are aware of what I’m eating and drinking.

You might say, “Well you can always lie or not put it down or even forget.”  This of course is true, but I won’t lie about it.  As a Christ follower and as a pastor, people tend to frown on this sort of thing, and I would be ashamed to lie.  The truth is, I could forget, but then one of you could always ask me “if I skipped my lunch or am I just empty-headed today?”

So that’s that. Please help me as I embark on my eating and drinking journey by holding me accountable, and enjoy the ride with me.

And by the way, today I’ve had two life saver mints.

Oct 06 2008 Published by under blogs,travels

Catalyst ’06 with Jeff and my southern family, Dave, DD, and Ridgeway!

This week the team at Fellowship Church is taking a road trip to Hotlanta to attend the Catalyst Conference.  I’m really looking forward to spending time with them and praying and talking about the future of our church, along with hearing from some of the best leaders in America.
I’ll be blogging and twittering throughout the event, and even plan on sharing some live stuff from our trip and hotel meeting room on Mogulus.

We leave soon.  Are you excited?

My Last Days Blogging

Aug 15 2008 Published by under A bit of everything

So today is my last day of blogging, because I’m going on vacation tomorrow, and I’ve decided not to bring my computer with me for the festivity of rest.  This will be the first time I haven’t blogged for more than a week since I started blogging in early October 2007, so it will be a welcome break.  Who knows, maybe I’ll come up with some fresh ideas for the blog.
Thank you to all of you who read, subscribe, or just take a looksy at Martyholman.com.  I love writing stuff, and sharing back and forth.
Todays Friday afteroon at the Internet Video will be my last blog until Monday, August 25th.
Until then, a few thoughts:

My height is not 5-2, It’s actually 6’3″. 5-2 is my people/week ratio.
Wanna help Claire?  Some crazy awesome people already have!
I will be microblogging using Twitter, which connects to my Facebook account.  You can follow me here.
I want to read two books, though I don’t know which ones yet, on vacation.  Any suggestions?
I’m so excited to be a part of Fellowship Church in Holden, Massachusetts!  I believe this fall is going to be one of the most amazing seasons we’ve ever seen at our church.  Just like I believe this summer has been.  We’ve been building community like never before, seeing people growing in their relationship with Jesus Christ, and I believe God is preparing us for something big.
My cousin, Jake is going to be playing at our church on Sunday, September 7th.  You will want to be here for that!

So that’s all for now. Thanks for reading and enjoying or not enjoying my written communication via the internet.

Live Different!

A New Age, part 1

Jul 09 2008 Published by under Life

It happened in October 2007.  Two things actually that rocked my world.  I might be a late bloomer, but I finally got why Myspace and facebook was so compelling, and why RSS feeds were going to change the world, and why the connectivity of the new web was literally transforming as we know it.
Then I had a conversation with this guy who confirmed a lot of the questions that I had with his thoughts of what was happening and walaa…

Then I read this book called “Wikinomics” that explained it to me step by step.

And now, I’d like to share  4 thoughts over the next 3 or 4 days that I’ve learned about the way life is moving in the future.  These thoughts are mainly for me, and Of course you can ignore them, but it won’t change the fact that they are happening, with or without us, like a train that cannot be stopped, save for a run-in with Hancock.

My thoughts are as follows:
1.  Go Public
2.  Open Sourcing
3.  Get rid of your junk
4.  Create content

Going public is the first thing I’m learning.  Going public is not so much about narcissism, as it is about being an open book.  My new refusal to hide everything about myself because “I deserve privacy.”  There is a price for this of course, specifically in my profession of clerical duties, but I think this is vitally important.  Personally I’ve always felt this way.  Some call this immaturity, because “pastors shouldn’t act that way”, but I prefer to call it “being real.”  Sometimes me being real is good, and sometimes I make mistakes, but I believe the end result is health.

Consider this proverb:  “Better is open rebuke than hidden love.”

This is one of the reasons I blog and twitter - not because I want people to hang on every word I have to say, but because I literally want to share the things that are on my heart and mind.  Open, not hidden.  Sharing, and not stifling.

So I continue to work at going public, sharing who I am and what I believe all the while attempting to grow the fruits of the spirit Paul speaks of in the book of Galatians.  What about you?

By the way, two things I still believe in:  Confidentiality & Tact

This post was written with the Watercooler Wednesday in mind
