You are the next big TV producer

Mar 11 2009 Published by under vision

What is it about these storylines that pulls us in?

The indestructible guy who will do anything to stop evil from winning, all in a 24 hour period.

The geek who gets the girl.

The girl who can’t choose between the bad boy and the good leader.

The team that utilizes each individual’s gifts to beat evil and save the day.

The young adult from the “middle of nowhere” America who risks everything to be a star.

The team of scientists that use all the clues to catch the bad guys.

The sarcastic genius doctor who solves every medical mystery there is.

The Lying experts who can tell you’re lying by talking to you, which is helpful when talking to a murderer.

The island that goes berserk and takes its inhabitants around different time periods like Forrest Gump hits a ping pong ball.

If you were to write the next hit TV show, what would your concept be?

What ya doing tonight?

May 08 2008 Published by under small groups

Tonight, theres a lot going on in my life.

I could be watching game 2 of this series.
Or I could watch another new episode of Lost, which is on fire right now.

But I also have my life group tonight, where 10-13 of my friends will come together to laugh, cry, talk, play, philosophize, pray, eat, and basically do whatever close friends do when they hang out.  So despite the fact I love the Celtics, and that I love the idea that Jack wil eventually be free of the island, I’m headed out to hang with these peeps.

Good times.

Random thoughts of Marty

Apr 24 2008 Published by under A bit of everything

I’m not feeling very well so now I sit uncomfortably on my bed confined to my room while my life group gets to hang out without me. Oh well, I hope they’re having a good time down there.  Sounds like there’s a boatload of them tonight.  So while I’m up here, I’ll share a few random thoughts:

*I changed my software version of WordPress to 2.5 recently, and my stats plugin stopped working.  This has gone on for about 3 weeks, and then yesterday, randomly, it starts working.

*Mariah Carey – Doing good again, huh?

*Today, I told the guy that influenced me to be a Pittsburgh fan (Steelers, Pirates, Panthers) that I would be switching baseball loyalties to the Red Sox Nation.  He took it surprisingly well.

*I found this guys blog today because of this guys blog.  I think I’ll be a fan.

*Tonight Carie and I celebrate a new episode of “Lost“.  It would not be an exaggeration to say that I haven’t been this excited for a TV show in a while.

*I can’t wait until I started feeling better.   I look like a wreck.

Your thoughts please?

Monday Moments 5 – Northway

Apr 21 2008 Published by under Monday's moments,vision

picture3.gif Welcome to MoMo’s! HERE are the guidelines. If this is your first time giving your “amazing story”, PLEASE take time to read them. It will save us both a lot of time.

To join me, write a post today (or a post you’ve written from last Monday to Sunday) sharing something tht has happened to you this last week - anything funny or interesting, crazy, fulfilled, too busy, hilarious, wistful, or any number of out of the ordinary happenings that made you happy or miserable last week.  Put a link in your post to this post permalink (not my general URL) and then put the permalink of your post (not your general URL) here at the end of this post. Thanks.  By the way, I do this because I love stories.  To tell them, to hear them, and to read them.

So tell me your “Inspired by the truth” story every Monday…

Here’s mine.

On Sunday night, right before my Celtics destroyed the Atlanta Hawks, I had the privilege to attend a vision meeting at Northway Church in Malta, New York.  Carie and I were in town and decided to take the opportunity to attend this meeting specifically for the volunteers of Northway.  Two blogging friends, Buddy and Brian, pastor this church in New York, and I was excited to hear what God had placed in their hearts for the future of Northway.

As soon as I walked in the door, I was awed at what God is doing in this church.  Volunteers from all 3 campuses (Malta, Clifton Park, and Colonie) were packed in, catching up and eating amazing some church provided food.  It looked from first glance that their was an excitement in this church that made the place buzz like the “Lost” island did whenever someone didn’t push that dang button every 108 seconds in the 2nd season.

After a while, the meeting started with one of the church bands leading us in some sweet music like “How great is our God”, “Shout to the Lord”, and “Let God arise”.  They were great – very professional and seemed to really enjoy themselves as they worshipped.

Then Buddy came on stage and introduced a first class video made by their production team (or whatever they call it) called “The Revolution” which highlited Buddy riding on a helicoptor and flying over all 3 campuses of Northway Church.  He shared some of the amazing things God is doing there at the church and through it all, I could see not only his passion for what was going on there, but the passion of the hundreds of volunteers looking on, obviously overwhelmed by what how God is using them.  By the end of the video, I was inspired and wanted to get in on the revolution myself.

After the video, Buddy came up to address the crowd.  he challenged them to Look back (to see what God has done), Look up (to see what He’s doing), and look forward (to see where God is taking us).  I was challenged in my own life to do these things and appreciated his authenticity as he tearfully recalled the early days of Northway, and the changes that had gone on in the process.

After Buddy finished, the band came up once again as the crowd sang “How Great is our God.”

Afterwards, I chatted with Buddy briefly and thanked him for his vision and for allowing me in on what God is doing there at Northway Church.  I believe we have a similar vision at Fellowship Church, and am more excited than ever to allow God to use us to carry it out.

How about you?

Super Powers

Mar 05 2008 Published by under Uncategorized

picture-48.jpg
I’m off to my phone booth

Two things I like:  Movies and TV shows filmed from different angles and viewpoints (Vantage Point & Crash) and movies and shows about men and women who have travelled this world immortally through generation and generations (Highlander & New Amsterdam).  Included in this list are movies and TV shows where someone’s super powers are the central theme of the show (Smallville & Spiderman & every other Marvel comic movie)

I’ve been thinking about why I & so many others like these projects so much, and I think I’ve come to a conclusion.  We enjoy playing God.  And these types of media are like the apple hanging from the tree, and it’s just out of our reach.  But at least we can watch.

Currently, the only person I know for sure that has the power to travel through time or to be everywhere at once or to climb tall buildings (should he choose to) is God, and it’s no secret that most of us envy, not only his position, but his abilities to “do whatever he wants.”

And we cannot.  But we wish we could.

So there’s this incredible tension that exists inside of us that cannot be quenched by the climax of a two hour flick at the theater down the street with overpriced food or the cliffhanger of 41 minutes of an episide of Lost.  The tension leaves the theater or the couch with us and stays in our minds, wishing that we too could “jump” from Main street to a Wall Street bank or that a plane crash survival was possible because being “lost” on a deserted island with Jack, Kate, or Sawyer couldn’t be all bad, right?

The only thing I know for sure is this:  That humankind, if given the opportunity for any of these types of God-like gifts, would more than likely ruin itself altogether if we had them.  Look what we’ve done with what we have.

This has been a thought I’ve had for “Watercooler Wednesday”  with Randy Elrod.

Until next time…
