A Dream without a Plan

Jan 26 2010 Published by Marty Holman under vision

My head is spinning.

As I told you before this year is my dream year – the year I implement some of the ideas that have gone on in my head over the last several years.   I will tell you what those things are, but, alas, that is not even the purpose of this post.  Somewhere between Christmas and now, my beliefs about what God is going to do here at Fellowship have gone huge, and it’s going fast.

Fellowship Holden is building. (more on that on Sunday)

“The Splat” is coming.

Fellowship Worcester is not far behind.

And on top of all this, Fellowship will be pouring into Haiti in finances and people power.

Of course none of this has literally started yet.  It’s all in planning stages, but God willing, very soon in this year Fellowship Church will never look the same. And this is why my head is spinning.

A mentor of mine says, “A dream without a plan is only a wish.”  I never understood what he meant until recently.  He told me that all of last year when I talked of my dreams, and I just plugged him as somewhat of a realist.  He should get out and dream more, I would tell myself.  Then after I found out I had been accepted into Ben Arment’s dream year, I made a plan to accomplish some of those dreams.  Without having spoken a word or having written a recent email to Ben, I just made a plan.  Certainly I could have done this beforehand, but something about this transition and 2010 and acceptance and people believing in me set me off, and a plan was made.

Then I sent my plan to my mentor, believing that he would think I was crazy and “settle me down”.  I was wrong.  He said this plan looked great and we may need to be fluid and changeable in regards to the plan, but it could be done.  Then he reminded me of the words he had spoke so many times before, “Marty, a  dream without a plan is only a wish.”

For the first time I got it.

On to 2009

Jan 05 2009 Published by Marty Holman under blogs

In 2008, I was able to:

Share life with this guy and this guy and this guy and this guy.

Enhance my vision because of Jason.

Reconnect with an old friend and learn so much from Brian.

once again be enamored by the art of my college friend Bart.

Meet and be influenced by wonderful pastors in my area like  Mike, Matt, and Josh.

Read the Hilarity of Don Miller on a regular basis.

Peer into the life and ideas of a CEO who follows Christ.

Be mentored by two of the greatest ideators in our world today, Seth & Ben (in my humble opinion)

Be inspired by the courage of Jenn.

Realize that more people blog in New England than I had previously thought.  Thanks Kevin and Erin (are you related or what?)

Combine my love for sports with my love for blogging under the genius blog of prayers for blowouts!

and read the Bible every day for a year via rss because of the great ideas of Life Church and their Bible site.

I was also able to reconnect with friends from my childhood, mentors from high school and college days, read from some of the greatest pastors in our world today on a regular basis, meet two of the most amazing brothers from Oklahoma and Virginia I probably will ever meet (Steven and Michael Harrison) and experience some of the truly great writing and thoughts of people right here in my own church.

Yep, I would suggest that you blog.

Breaking News

Sep 30 2008 Published by Marty Holman under blogs

On Ben Arments’s blog this morning, he announced a new blog from his friend, Barton Damer.  Bart is an amazing graphic designer and has been doing some really sweet stuff for churches all acros the country (and maybe even the world.
Name drop ahead – drive slowly:  One cool thing for me is that Bart and I have a history.  You see, we attended the same college/military school and at one point took leadership of our collegian (christian college speak for “Fraternity”).
So, Bart, this picture is for you.

Welcome to the blog world!
