[...] Yesterday I introduced a conversation between my friends George and Darren. I know them from two completely different contexts, but from my recent facebook interactions with them, I noticed that they were very similar in some ways and very different in others. So I thought I would ask them to answer some questions for me via email, then replay the action here at martyholman.com. The following is part 2 of that discussion. You can find part 1 here.
I totally agree about how important it is to have another person helping you to understand yourself, that is really able to help you navigate even your own mind. I actually talk about that a little in the next entries :)

To give you an example of one of those people in my life, when I wrote this and sent it to George I also sent it to Nora to get her take on it and her response was:

Nora: im reading what you just sent me
and i can sum it up like this
"my name is darren and i am afraid of becoming an asshole, which is what people who believe in truths are"

I don't believe that everyone who believes in absolute truths becomes an a-hole but I have definitely known a decent number of people (myself included) that have let their concept of fundamental truth get the better of them make them into people they didn't want to be. Nora knows that, and as 'rational' as I try to be she can call me out and remind me that I have deeper forces giving me a bent one way of the other.

That's a really interesting question. "what is the basis for your world view?" I've never thought about that before. But you can bet that I will think about it now.

I think the superficial rule following that George mentioned would be a major contention of many people outside of religion looking in. I also enjoyed the perspective of how absolute truth is freeing. It is. I wish more people could see how this is true. Although, even if someone on the outside looking into Christianity does see it, because people inside the circle fail to truly understand that themselves, it makes it hard for the outsider to come in.

Darren, although an engineer, is a romantic. It is very difficult to look at yourself from the third person unless you have a partner to help you do it. To break down your mental wall and help you see something outside of yourself. I cannot do it alone, but maybe I'm just too stubborn. Who knows. But the idea is a good one. It is important to understand that though I see the world through certain glasses, it is important to realize that others have glasses too and as hard as it is for me to take off mine, it is hard for them to take off theirs.
